Living our best lives,
independently

Our Mission

Our Mission - To provide opportunities for adults with spinal cord and brain injuries to live independently in safe, specially designed and well-maintained settings that allow them to manage their own affairs while sharing the costs of  home management.

Who We Are

Since 1976, Adults Toward Independent Living (ATIL) has provided affordable housing for disabled adults in the Santa Clara Valley. Our residents lead independent lives in specially designed and maintained homes that allow them to manage their own affairs while sharing the costs of home management.

Founded by families of disabled adults, ATIL is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing disabled adults with a unique and empowering alternative to convalescent hospitals and board and care facilities. With caregiver assistance, our residents enjoy a safe, family atmosphere that helps them to live independently, controlling virtually every aspect of their daily lives.

If you or a family member wishes to explore independent living in any ATIL home, please contact us to arrange an interview with the resident manager at Sam Chriest House in Cupertino or Shamrock House in San Jose.

Meet Our Residents

Our residents take charge of their own care. With assistance from caregivers, they address their individual needs whenever possible. Residents pool their resources to pay for household expenses including food, electric and gas services, cable television, entertainment, and transportation costs not covered by government agencies.

Meet Our Caregivers

Caregivers at ATIL houses are responsible and patient. They know that our residents depend on reliable, compassionate caregiving. They understand the unique challenges and needs of our residents. They willingly cooperate with other caregivers as needed. For many, English is a second language. At an ATIL house, caregivers have an opportunity to learn a new language and assimilate fully into a new culture. ATIL caregivers are committed to our residents and their fellow caregivers.

Alternative To A Nursing Home

ATIL rents rooms to non-ambulatory adults who require a high level of personal care. In a shared living environment, residents receive the types of individual attention from caregivers that simply isn’t available in large facilities that focus on medical care. Caregivers at our houses work with each other, cooperating to maintain a supportive atmosphere for residents. The goal is to provide exceptional care and to get residents into their wheelchairs and ready to conduct their own activities every day.

Our Recent Donors

We want to thank individuals and organizations that have recently donated funds or their time and work to ATIL.

An all-volunteer organization that is now affiliated with volunteers installed a patio and table in the backyard of Sam Chriest House. Residents can visit with family and friends, enjoying privacy in a beautiful outdoors setting.

Kevin Wing and Ken Day of Kevin Wing Media+Communications generously donated their time, equipment and expertise in videotaping interviews for our website.

The Fremont Bank Foundation has generously donated funds to ATIL for concrete driveway and walkway repairs at our houses to help ensure the safety and comfort of our residents and visitors.

Our neighbor church has been a regular donor to ATIL for many years. Several church members have served on ATIL's Board in the past, and perishioners are always available to help our residents.

Our Legacy Donors

We are always grateful for the contributions and support of our early donors. Each, in a significant way, made the development and growth of ATIL possible.

Donate

We are always grateful for the generosity of donors who believe in our mission. I want to assure our donors that we only request contributions that benefit our residents. We respect our donors' privacy. We will not identify a donor for any purpose without prior written consent of the donor.

Our Board of Directors

ATIL board members include parents of disabled adults living in ATIL houses, residents and members of the general community. Board members serve as volunteers, without compensation. Since ATIL has never had paid employees, many tasks that would normally be performed by employees are done by our board members. Without the operational expenses incurred by most non-profits, ATIL is able to allocate all of its resources for the benefit of our residents.

We always welcome a conversation with anyone interested in joining the ATIL Board. If you can serve on our board, or contribute in any other way to support ATIL’s efforts, please contact Steve Chriest at 925-570-5459 or schriest@atilhouses.org.
